Dr. Robert Gorman retired in August 2019 after 40 years of teaching, scholarship, and service at Texas State University. He joined the Department of Political Science in 1979 after having received his doctorate from the University of Oregon and was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1991. In 2012, was named University Distinguished Professor. At various times in his years here, Dr. Gorman served in a variety of leadership roles including service as the director of M.A. Program in Political Science, director of the college’s International Studies Program and served in the faculty senate. He received the university’s Presidential Seminar Award in 1987, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 1993, and from 1992-2002 served as the university’s NEH Distinguished Teaching Professor of the Humanities.

A specialist in international law, refugee and humanitarian aid issues, and African politics, he is the author of more than two dozen articles and book chapters. His books include Political Conflict on the Horn of Africa (1981), Introduction to International Relations, Refugee Aid and Development, Historical Dictionary of Human Rights and Humanitarian Organizations, and What’s Wrong with Global Governance.
