Texas State’s Austin Internship Program offered by the Center for Research, Public Policy, and Training housed in the Department of Political Science at Texas State University provides students a unique opportunity to engage with the legislative process, gain practical experience in government, and develop professional skills.

About the Program:

Overview

The program is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legislative environment, including committee hearings, bill drafting, constituent services, and policy analysis. This program provides students with invaluable experience in the legislative and government process and prepares them for careers in public service. 

Placement

Interns will be placed in various legislative offices and state government agencies, such as:

  • The Governor’s office
  • Senator or Representative's offices
  • Committee offices
  • Legislative staff agencies (e.g., Legislative Budget Board, Legislative Council)
  • Various state government agencies

Duties

Interns may be involved in a variety of tasks, including:

  • Researching legislative issues
  • Drafting bills and amendments
  • Attending committee hearings and floor sessions
  • Analyzing legislation
  • Providing constituent services
  • Assisting with office administration
  • Assisting with agency programs, policy development, and legislative relations

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must be pursuing a degree at Texas State University
  • Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Applicants must have sixty (60) hours completed before they participate in the program. Candidates are encouraged to apply in the semester before sixty (60) are completed.

Program Costs & Scholarships

The 2024-2025 Texas State Austin Internship Program provides funding based on annual allocation and the number of students enrolled. Typically, students fund their tuition through existing financial aid, designated campus funding, and the Center for Research, Public Policy, and Training (CRPPT) need and merit-based scholarships. If you have concerns about the program's cost, please contact the CRPPT. We do not want financial concerns to keep you from applying for the Texas State Austin Internship Program.
